Two Photos Below: This coal heater buggy/sleigh/stage foot warmer may be found at Antiques Road House in Indian River, Michigan. Three sides of the metal insert have ventilation for the hot coals or brick, with two of the vents being adjustable. This particular foot warmer first was located in Frankfort, Michigan. It would be interesting to know the travels it has made (probably in Michigan), and just whose precious feet it has warmed.

Ray Lewis rode this bike in Petoskey "street parades" pre–1935 while he wore vintage clothing and a derby hat. The last time Ray rode this bike he was going down Sheridan Street hill, fell off at the bottom and cut a gash in his head on a cement wall on the corner of Emmet/Sheridan. He had stitches and always had a scar on the right side of his forehead. The bike hung on the wall in the back of Ray's sign shop for years. After Ray passed, his wife offered the bike to Jim because she knew he had an appreciation for it.

1902
Photo Below Left: Petoskey vintage and antique bicycle aficionado, Dave Russell, held an instruction booklet "For Taking Apart and Assembling THE POPE Two-Speed Gear and Coaster Brake" bicycle produced by Pope Manufacturing Co Eastern Department in Hartford, Connecticut. Its Western Department was headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The mechanism of this bike enabled the rider, by a slight pressure of foot on pedal, to change from high to low gear for hill-climbing and difficult roads. The Eastern Division produced the "Columbia," "Cleveland," "Crawford," "Tribune," and "Fay Juveniles". Dave Russell's Columbia bike's history began with its ownership by Clyde Ruley (1879-1956), a Bay View resident and a worker from the Bay View Association. Ruley was a bicycle racer who won many races on his bicycles.

Mr. and Mrs. Ruley's cottage was at 307 Brockway Avenue barely in Bay View near Division Road Hill.
They began making this cottage their summer and winter home in about 1938.
They began making this cottage their summer and winter home in about 1938.
In 2022 Bill Prall [in the photo above with Dave Russell] of Harbor Springs, Michigan, a bike enthusiast, was in possession of two bikes that had been given to him by people who had found the bikes' pieces inside the wall of a Bay View cottage. Bill Prall knew the perfect home for the bikes' pieces and associated memorabilia would be with Dave Russell. After Dave’s careful reassembling and restoration of the bikes, along with local research, Dave hosted a gathering on 27 June 2022 in Greenwood Cemetery at the grave site of Clyde Ruley. Several people attended to acknowledge the unusual preservation of two historic bikes, of Owen “Clyde” Ruley.
Ruley owned the Columbia Bicycle in the early 1900s. In 1942 during a national rubber drive, the 2 July 1942 Northern Michigan Review reported: “ Emmet County thus far has gone ‘all-out” in the rubber drive. Everything from 1916 vintage tires to worn-out jar rings have been taken to the filling stations in the county. City Manager P.T. Mitchell had the water lowered in Bear River early in the campaign in order to facilitate the search for old rubber. Petoskey youngsters searching the stream bed retrieved approximately 4000 pounds of scrap rubber.” More articles about the war effort are posted farther down on this same web page in the 1941 > 1942 year, revealing that Miss Betty Mancil even ripped the tire off her ancient high-wheel bicycle.
Even a house-to-house, or farm-to-farm, collection of scrap iron was being held. Michigan was being asked to do its part, not only for the buying of more war bonds and stamps, but in turning over to local junk dealers every available piece of unused metal and rubber.
It is surmised that Clyde Ruley realized his precious “safety bikes” could be confiscated. Thus, he disassembled them, and hid them in the wall; not to be discovered until years and years later.

As an aside from the article above regarding Reverend Weaver conducting funerals in his hupmobile; referencing conducting Mrs. Richards' funeral in 1893: Research has revealed that James Herbert Richards married Grace Elizabeth "Carrie" Lattin. Mrs. Richards had been reported ill in the 6 January 1892 (article below left) and had been sick for some time in 25 January 1893 (article below right), and then she died in Canby (near Levering, Michigan) on 25 January 1892 according to Ancestry records. No death date notice was located in local newspapers. The Emmet County, Michigan, hand-written death records showed “Grace E. Richards of Bliss, Michigan, died 25 January 1892." How can that be possible, considering the 1893 news article telling that she had been ill for some time??? Grace “Carrie” Richards’ husband James Herbert Richards moved to Barry County, Michigan and died there on 4 December 1929. Herbert Richards is listed as buried in Barry Township, Barry County, in North Hickory Cemetery [AKA North Cemetery, Pennock Cemetery]. ~ Hemingway Trip from Oak Park, Illinois, to Walloon Lake, Michigan ~
Summer of 1917
Summer of 1917
Dr. Clarence and Grace Hemingway built their Windemere Cottage on Walloon Lake in 1899. Their early years of family trips north involved riding the ship Manitou from their home in Oak Park to Harbor Springs, where they would ride the train to "The Foot" of Walloon Lake. There they would ride a steamer to the dock of Bacon's Landing on the PRE-West Arm of the lake, just a short distance from Windemere Cottage.
By the Summer of 1917, Ernest Hemingway's mother Grace Hall Hemingway had written of their annual trip in her photo album, with the accompanying photos: 29 June 1917 their four daughters, Marcelline, Ursula, Carol, and Madelaine "Sunny" left on the train. Then on June 30th, the two sons, Ernest and Leiceister, with parents Dr. Clarence and Grace, left in "Tin Lizzie" arriving at Walloon 4 July 1917; Family returned to Oak Park 3 September 1917.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Included in the Autumn 2003 Michgan Hemingway Society newsletter was a description of the details of Dr. and Mrs. Hemingway, Ernest, and Leicester’s trip to Walloon Lake from Oak Park, Illinois, as follows:
"The journey began with a heavily overloaded vehicle pulling away from the Hemingway home on Kenilworth Avenue. On the first day the travelers drove east to Chicago and followed the Lake Michigan southern shore to Watervliet, Michigan, where they spent the night.
On the second day the first signs of trouble appeared as the vehicle required minor repair in Muskegon and Whitehall, Michigan. That evening, the Hemingways stayed at a lodging house in Whitehall.
On the third day they covered only sixty-five miles, perhaps because of lost time in changing a flat tire.
On the fourth day they made a wrong turn going miles out of the way before finally arriving at the doctor's brother George's house at Ironton where they spent a restful night.
On the fifth day the car was behaving so badly that they averaged only eight miles an hour during the thirty-one remaining miles to the cottage. Then, one might suppose, they all headed for the beach and a refreshing swim, but this detail remains undocumented."
Harry Mulford Jewett (1870~1933) acquired a car designed by Andrew Bachle, which was promoted by Fred O. Paige. In 1909 Jewett and a few Detroit businessmen organized the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company with Fred O. Paige as the company president. Jewett removed Paige as president in 1910, redesigned, and improved the Paige vehicle. The first six-cylinder Paige appeared in 1915, along with a Paige truck line operating from 1918 into 1923. Jewett Motors, Inc. became a subsidiary of the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company. This company developed a six-cylinder Jewett Six also called the “Baby Paige”. Sales excelled in 1923, but competition from other car manufacturers caused a sales decline by 1926; the Eve of the Great Depression. On 1 January 1927 the Jewett vehicle was discontinued, and Henry Jewett sold his controlling interest in Jewett Motors, Inc. to parent company Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company... sold to the Graham Brothers on 10 June 1927: Joseph B., Robert C., and Ray A. who had just sold their truck business to Dodge. The Conway, Michigan, Graham Brothers, with their father Z.F. Graham, became directors of the company. The Graham Brothers were aggressive with the automobile business. Information about the Graham-Paige automobiles from 1928~1932 may be accessed by clicking HERE.
Pictures of the Old Graham-Paige plant in Dearborn, Michigan may be accessed by clicking HERE.
During August 1929, the 1930 Graham-Paige models were announced. That was the last year of the Graham-Paige named vehicle. Thereafter, the car was the single name of “Graham”. Joseph W. Frazer, former president of Willys-Overland, assumed control of the Graham-Paige Motors Corp. The Depression Years of the 1930s, leading into WWII, were hard, especially for independent auto makers like Graham-Paige. By 1940 the Grahams’ auto maker had lost money and announced and connected with Henry J. Kaiser who was making plans for a POST-WAR automobile. The huge costs for the Grahams of designing and manufacturing a brand-new car devoured the Graham-Paige assets. The company quit its automobile business for the second time.
Various business ventures changed until Graham-Paige maintained only its farm equipment division, moving from Detroit to York, Pennsylvania, to sell rototillers. The company divested in such a way as to begin investing in real estate, and in 1962 Graham-Paige Corp. changed its name to Madison Square Garden Corporation. By 1977 the former auto maker real estate assets disappeared into the Gulf & Western conglomerate. Golf & Western evolved into Paramount, which today (2021) is media conglomerate Viacom.
Conway, Michigan's, Graham Brothers' name continues in Conway's history... through their cottage properties located on their beloved named Graham Point on Crooked Lake. Graham Brothers Joseph B., Robert C. and Ray A. purchase of Paige Motor Company was announced in May 1927. The obituary of the Graham Brothers' father Z.F. Graham below stated their father had been a part of the purchase and reorganization of the Paige-Jewel automobile company. The sale was finalized in June 1927, with Z.F. Graham soon passing away 7 September 1927 of a heart attack.
Before the Graham Brothers made a 1927 purchasing connection with the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company, the Paige had a presence in the local lower Northern Michigan area as noted in the articles and advertisements below.
Mr. Ira W. Leach came to Petoskey from Niles, Michigan, and established a profitable retail popcorn business. He soon became known as "The Popcorn King". From a small hand machine the business grew until he operated with a large powerful automobile [Photo Above] and later with a permanent quarters on Mitchell Street, adjacent then to the Ferris Grocery Store. Ira's son L. Mearl Leach later operated The Popcorn King, as he became known. Next, Mearl Leach was known as "The Answer Man" because he learned the "comings and goings" of his patrons. When Mearl retired from his popcorn business he ably took a job with the chamber of commerce running the information booth.
Two Articles Above: The blacksmith shop was NOT on Liberty Street as Mr. McDermott's obituary above stated. The blacksmith shop was located on Ingalls Avenue.
1943 Photo Below: The little girl, Linda (Lewis) Lark, was drinking from a fountain which was also used as a "horse trough." The trough was placed there when the Trading Post was located on that property at 620 Ingalls Avenue named after the second white family in Petoskey. Bill McDermott's blacksmith shop is shown in the background. The trough and the shop were probably placed there during the 1800s, and removed about 1950.
Letter to the Editor Below: Elnora Lee was a local historian who wrote below of Petoskey's West Side with its interesting historical beginnings, including Bill McDermott's blacksmith shop.
Two Obituaries at Left: As Elnora Lee had noted above, Hazen Ingalls had named three streets in then Emmet City [West Side of Petoskey] after family names: Ingalls, and sons Jackson and Liberty. Jackson's obituary is far left, and his wife Elnora Ingalls is center left. Her 1918 obituary notes the family names of the streets as well.
2021
The 29 December 2021 Petoskey News Review highlighted: "Enabling use of electric vehicles is key to ending climate crisis." For those gas powered vehicle owners who find the price of vehicles to cost more than many paid for their houses; and add the cost of gas, insurance, and repairs of vehicles, already consuming a great deal of individual incomes, it is scary to read the following forecast in the same news article:
"On Nov. 10 at the UN Climate Summit in Glasgow Scotland, six major automakers including Ford, Mercedes-Benz, General Motos and Volvo, as well as 30 national governments pledged to work toward phasing out sales of new gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles by 2040 worldwide, and by 2035 in 'leading markets.' The goal of the nation of the world for ending the climate crisis is to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and to keep the global temperature to a .5-degree Centigrade increase size of the late 19th century."
When people barely can afford a gasoline powered vehicle, consider in the last couple of months a gentleman from Finland who had purchased a used electric vehicle for $40,000.00. His car batteries now need replacing, and that replacement alone will cost him $22,000.00. In December 2021 a new Tesla Model S costs $100,690.00.
Kids' Bike Fest
2023
Poster Below: Lynn Duse passed away in 2023. She had spent her entire lifetime and career serving the needs of children, as exemplified through her children's clothing shop, the Circus Shop; often with the promotion of children's events and activities. Lynn loved Petoskey, its waterfront, the city gatherings and parade events, and EVERYTHING about downtown Petoskey. Before Lynn passed, she already had visions of a "kids' bike parade" as in days of old. In Lynn Duse's honor and memory a "FIRST Annual Lynn Duse Memorial KIDS' BIKE FEST!" will be held 10 June 2023 at 10-2 at the Little Traverse History Museum, Petoskey Michigan.
Photo Below: Lynn's 1960 Petoskey High School classmate Pinky McCutcheon and her brother Ted, provided the cover photo from the July 1958 The Northern Michigan Skipper published by their father Ted McCutcheon of Walloon Lake, Michigan. The "About the Cover" text below the photo tells about the bike and about Lynn.
Hats off to so many of Lynn's Family and Friends who helped to make this
