Article/Photo Below: The Ironton Ferry's Chief operator Walter "Turk" Jarvis estimated that since April 50,000 vehicles used the water crossing facility. That figure was supported by the Charlevoix Road Commission figures which showed 48,253 through the month of November. Those are the highest totals since 1949 when the Road Commission and the Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners took control of the facility and set up the total system. Jarvis told that 80 years before that the ferry services had been free.
1990 Map Below: The tour (anytime... not only Fall) around lakes Walloon and Charlevoix include a ride across the Ironton Ferry. Undoubtedly, the cost of the ferry ride today is more than the $1.00 fee listed on the map below, but otherwise directions are correct.

~ Hemingway Family in Ironton ~
Obituaries Below: George and Anna Hemingway, with their daughters Virginia and Margaret operated the Hemingway Nursery near Ironton for over 40 years where they made their home. The daughters were cousins of the author Ernest Hemingway because their father George Hemingway was a brother to Ernest's father Clarence Hemingway.
On a trip north to Windemere on Walloon Lake, from Oak Park, Illinois, Clarence, Grace, and Ernest stopped at George's in Ironton, shown in the photo below from Grace's photo album that is in the public domain in the Clarke Historical Library, Central Michigan University.
