In the 27 July 2015 "Special to Saturday" Petoskey News Review article written by Mary Jane Doerr, it was explained that the law in Michigan was changed in 2010 to allow local visitors bureaus to increase hotel rooms surcharges from 2 to 5 percent. Neither Charlevoix, nor Petoskey rushed to increase those room fees to be used to fund their tourism promotions. Executive director of the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau, Peter Fitzsimons, explained, "Eventually we were at a disadvantage and couldn't keep up with the competition so we finally increased the tax in 2012." Fitzsimmons established the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau in 1985 [Fitzsimons held the position for 37 years, retiring January 2022].
The above 2015 article continued that in 2011 the area visitors bureau budget was $800,000.00 while other areas increased the room tax and saw an increase in their market share because they could increase their advertising. "So, the rate on the area's 2,800 local hotel rooms was increased to 5 percent and with that increase the budget of the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau budget went up to $2.2 million." The Petoskey Bureau wanted to expand their advertising to other states, Canada, and even to South America. "What is not measureable through room rentals are the approximately 249,000 family and friends that visit 86 percent of the residents of Emmet County every year, according to a Michigan State University research study."
While more statistics from this article may be accessed by clicking HERE, the article did acknowledge that additional changes in tourism marketing was had through digital advertising. Fitzsimons' area extended from Boyne City up to north of Harbor Springs, and the tourism facebook page touted 50,000 followers.

2019 Budget
2019 Budget
At $2,850,000.00 the 2019 Budget income is about $50,000 more than the $2,800,000.00 Budget Expenses. It appears that one employee's salary is budgeted at $165,000.00 plus benefits, for 2019, while he serves under a board of directors. The Petoskey Area Convention Visitors Bureau is a member of the overall Michigan Association of Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The 8 January 2022 Petoskey News Review headlined: "New Petoskey visitors bureau director starts work, joins community." With "forever" director Peter Fitzsimons having retired, new director Jim Powell took over the position on 3 January 2022. Powell is a former Michigander who has spent the last 16 years in Park City UT as Marketing Director & Communications. Earlier in 1987 in the Midland and Detroit, Michigan, areas Jim Powell performed in Advertising Sales, a Group Management Supervisor and Account Director.
