Central Michigan University's Clarke Historical Library posted the following.
"The Battle Creek Sanitarium is widely known as the birthplace of corn flakes thanks to the innovations of Dr. John H. Kellogg and his brother W.K Kellogg. Patients would visit the sanitorium for Dr. John H. Kellogg's treatments and in that process would be introduced to the wonderful taste of his cornflakes. In 1898 Kellogg and his brother W.K. Kellogg founded the Battle Creek Sanitarium Health Food Company to handle the production of cornflakes and other foods for sanitarium patients. However, just a few years later in 1906, following a dispute over the distribution of their cereal, W.K. Kellogg formed his own cereal company, the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company (later renamed Kellogg Company)."

Author and Chef Herman Breithaupt of Walloon Lake passed away January 1978
Herman A. Breithaupt owned and operated Hemlock Point Resort on Walloon Lake, Michigan, for 30 summers. He retired in 1965 as director of commercial cooking at Detroit's Chadsey High School, a program he started in January 1939. He also helped to establish the commercial cooking program at Petoskey High School in the 1960's. He served three years as an apprentice cook in his native Allmansweir, Germany. In 1913 while living in Canada he worked the kitchen of the Queen's Hotel in Montreal. When he moved to the U.S. in 1915 he worked in hotel kitchens in Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha and Des Moines where In 1910 he married Ida Selzer. In the 1930's Herman was in charge of dining rooms aboard steamers operated by the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Co, gravitating into the field of education, teaching culinary arts and the elements of good nutrition. He published his books Commercial Cooking and Instructional Guide for the Hospitality Industry, Herman the Chef's Own Menu and Book, and in 1972 published How We Started Students on Successful Foodservice Careers. Many of Chef Herman's former students are numbered among the nation's leading chefs.

Edith Gilbert, a long-time resident of Charlevoix had been labeled as a "world-renowned author, wedding consultant and etiquette legend." Edith often was called the "Grand Dame" of Charlevoix," the epitome of class, throwing numerous galas and celebrations for family, friends and acquaintances." Gilbert wrote several books, including "The Complete Wedding Planner, and the significant Summer Resort Life: Tango, Teas and All, about Charlevoix. At the age of 89, Gilbert tried a new venture by designing, manufacturing and distributing "Plum Crazy," a plum conserve to more than 30 gift and gourmet shops through Norther Michigan. [NOTE: Mancelona Chamber of Commerce received a call from Sarah Kitchen, who, along with her husband, Don, owns Kitchen Farms. The update was provided to us in response to the numerous messages from caring friends and customers in the surrounding communities following the devastating fire that destroyed their buildings on May 17, 2021. We were asked to pass this along to you.] "First and foremost, we are all safe. Everyone got out. We have a total loss of our warehouse buildings. The warehouses and packaging sheds are gone. The vehicles used for harvest were not damaged. Our employees are secure. We got half of the potato crop in the ground, and the other half were seeds that burned up in the fire. We are resilient and we will rebuild, stronger. We are hoping to be restored and operating fully in time for the 2022 crop next year. This year, we will have crops but they will be sold differently. Don Kitchen will make happen what needs to happen. Right now, while the potatoes are in the ground and growing, we will focus mostly on tearing down and rebuilding. Thank you to all the firefighters and personnel from all the communities who were here to help. We appreciate you all. Thank you to the community for your support and caring. We will come back. Trust that. Kitchen Farms is not done." |
