The following information is included in the 9 November 2023 Emmet County Planning meeting minutes:
Legal Notice: A request by Trish Garber for Garber Real Estate Holdings, LLC for a Special Use Permit to install a 40' tower at properties addressed as 1219, 1291 & 1391 Lears Road in Section 18 of Bear Creek Township. The property is zoned B-2 General Business and includes tax parcels 24-01-19-18-100-004 & 100-023.
The property is zoned B-2 General Business and the properties are 0.56 & 0.18 acres for a total of 0.74 acres. Zoning to the south, east and west is the same. Property to the north is Tribal Trust land and not subject to County Zoning. Access is via Lears Road using the existing drives. The plot plan of the site was shown. The proposal is to allow a forty (40’) foot radio tower – a special land use in the B-2 zoning district with supplemental regulations (Section 26.01). The buildings are existing and meet the required setbacks. The proposed tower will be over 40 feet from each setback line. There is an existing structure on the property that houses Petoskey Bridal – a retail establishment. Driveway is paved. No change to the impervious surface of the property is proposed. No outdoor lighting identified. Signage and Lighting can be reviewed administratively at a future time. The tower schematic information was shown. The township has recommended approval of this case.

Photo Below: On 22 September 1939 the FIRST Night of football was to be played at the PHS stadium. The 60 feet poles were located 8 feet into the ground. A total of 78,000 watts of light were to be thrown over the field, making it one of the best lighted fields in Northern Michigan. Article on 21 September 1939 in the Petoskey News Review told of the lighting installation at that time... not certain if the pole/lights in the photo below are still the same ones.

~ Mikey Griffes "The Kite Flying Ambassador" for the City of Petoskey ~
Photo and Slideshow Below 14 June 2021: Mikey, the Kite Guy, had five huge kites in the air over the open space at Petoskey's Bay Front. Mikey said his record in that location was 15 kites up at the same time. Being the owner of about 30 kites, ranging in sized from three feet to 19 feet, sometimes Mikey flies his many beautiful kites in Mackinaw City.
Mikey Griffes explains that kite flying requires strength to reel in a kite on a windy date, requires good weather with an ideal wind speed of about 10 miles per hour, and requires rigorous maintenance to stitch up little rips and tears. While flying his kites, Mikey enjoys the people he meets who ask questions, or have comments about his hobby. He is a true kite flying ambassador for the City of Petoskey.

Petoskey ~ Home of the Million-dollar Sunset
Petoskey can always claim title to beautiful sunsets. This particular 7 June 2023 sunset, however, takes its hue from the drifting smoke of the raging wildfires in Canada. Presently, Detroit and New York have some of the worst air quality among major cities across the world, from the fires which have burned since April 2023, and continued, scorching about 13,000 square miles.
Photo Below: Although taken 20 days after the above photo, Canada's raging fires had made the air quality even WORSE. Usually the view in the photo below would include a view of Little Traverse Bay with Harbor Springs in the background... usually a sight of beauty. That sight was obliterated. This was the very worst air quality day I ever have witnessed. ~ Karla Buckmaster

11 July 2014 Petoskey News Review's reporter Babette Stenuis Stolz wrote: "This 18 month public arts sculpture project creates a metaphor for life that transforms the skyline and encourages people to seek out the sculptures. In the discovery process one becomes aware of their sense of place within the city.... Detroit artist John Sauve created the Man in the City project in 2008..."
