When Wayne removed a blackboard, he found behind it an old slate board with this message written upon it: "E.W. Orton, 75 years old Dec. 30, 1913. No snow. Hurra [sic] for a dry nation." The clipping, below right, is the obituary for Elhanan W. Orton, a veteran Petoskey carpenter who died in 1917, just 3 years after he had written on the old slate board.

Dr. Cameron Brunet-Koch told the strengths of the presidents of NCMC in a 25 June 2018 Petoskey News Review article titled "Retiring College President Shares Memories" by Jullian Fellows:
“The first president got the college established and he was a wizard in getting all the legislative things in place. To be a founding college president is a tremendous accomplishment. Then Bob Graham was the second president and he really worked on getting the college in solid financial footing. I think I came along, as the third president, when it was a perfect time for the college really to become engaged in our larger community.”

When NCMC moved into its new campus buildings, the public schools used this building as the superintendent's office. It was during that period of time that the administration building burned. All that was saved from this building was the front stone arch which was then incorporated into the new administration office that was built for the Petoskey Public Schools (still standing in same location in 2017).

Mascot!
Mascot!
It was a surprise to read in the 5 December 2020 Petoskey News Review [Click HERE to access article] that NCMC officials had narrowed down a field of Potential mascots and nicknames to a list of eight, and were seeking input from college staff, students and the community to help to make a decision. The one and only NCMC mascot had been the "Fighting Ferrets" forever, as noted in the articles above.
The above noted PNR article inspired the following letter addressed to the PNR reporter Jillian Fellows, Dr. David Finley (NCMC President), Carol Laenen (VP of NCMC Marketing), and The NCMC Board of Trustees:
"Being an avid promoter of NCMC, and a long-time preserver of NCMC history, I am amazed to read in the 5 December 2020 Petoskey News Review (PNR) of NCMC hunting for an official mascot. The recent article acknowledged that the Fighting Ferrets mascot was begun in jest, continuing to say, "It [Fighting Ferrets] was never an official mascot, never adopted in any official way, but it was, and still is apparently, among some people who have been here for a while a very popular alternative for us.”
If any historical research had been conducted throughout the approximately two years of buildup of this recent hunting for a mascot, and the writing of this 2020 article, the 11 September 1998 Petoskey News Review article titled “The Fighting Ferrets” should have come to the forefront.
The 1998 article does tell of the 1970s jesting origin of the Fighting Ferrets, but the same article states,
'As the college changed, the Fighting Ferret was actually adopted as the official mascot. The instructors aren’t sure exactly when their mythical little weasel became sanitized.
Now he’s seen on North Central T-shirts, sweatshirts and part of the official logo.'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What now is being proposed with the possibility of wiping away the already official mascot from NCMC history sadly foreshadows the happenings in today’s "cancel culture” along with the destroying of historical statues… At least as far as I know, ferrets are not a racial issue, so I can think of no reason that the Fighting Ferrets mascot needs to be canceled, or destroyed, as the existing and continuing official NCMC mascot.
NCMC president Finley said, "The partnership between North Central and Cheboygan Area Schools will make CAHS the hub for secondary and collegiate education in Cheboygan County"... with "innumerable benefits to giving prospective students a direct connection to college advising and support services while they're still in high school." ~ Future NCMC Capital Plans Necessitate City Rezoning ~
The 21 August 2021 Petoskey News Review headline stated: "Plans to rezone college campus catch neighbors a bit off guard." The article included the college's plans which would necessitate the city rezoning as follows: "The rezoning is a preliminary step to a sweeping 15-year development plan that sets out to update and expand on many of the campus’ existing buildings, create a new library and media center in what is now the Iron Horse Cafe, install an outdoor amphitheater, improve navigability around campus, and build new student housing, among other goals."
During September 2021 it was reported in the Petoskey News Review that NCMC had approached the Petoskey City Council Planning Commission to categorize the campus under a "college district" zone opposed to the present single-family district. The city's planning commission recommended the new zoning to the City Council, whereas the college's Howard Street neighbors objected. The rezoning is a first step to a 15-year college development plan. The new zoning would allow college buildings to be as tall as four stories; 60 feet total, set back 45 feet from the midpoint of Howard Street.
The 22 November 2022 Petoskey News Review reported: "For the FiRST time ever, the North Central athletic program hosted a pair of collegiate basketball games, with their host Timberwolves welcoming in Mott Community College for a men's and women's doubleheader." The many local promoters had to wait during the last years, for construction to reshape the Student and Community Resource Center and then, wait to be accepted into the National Junior College Athletic Association and Michigan Community College Athletic Association. Along with many others, Athletic Director Ashley Antonishen and NCMC president David Finley worked through the pandemic making preparation for this night to happen. The largest donor to the project was Petoskey Plastics, with the gym now named Petoskey Plastics Arena. Petoskey Plastics owners Paul and Melissa Keiswetter (she also serves as secretary of the NCMC board of trustees) did the honor of cutting the ribbon along with NCMC president David Finley. The newly renovated arena features a regulation-size wood court, along with Daktronics scoreboards donated by the Kroeger-Mainland Foundation, a new athletic training facility and spectator seating for 350 fans who filled every seat for the opening game.
The 18 November 2023 Petoskey News Review announced the NCMC Board of Trustees had appointed a new member following the resignation of Jennifer Shorter who was appointed to the board, recently in 2022, to fill the vacancy of Mr. Millard. Shorter cited her “frustration with the college’s culture” for her resignation. The board has unanimously appointed Keith Pretty to fill Shorter’s vacated seat. Shorter also expressed criticism for the way the search/process was done for her previous seat. Shorter also expressed displeasure with lack of attention paid to college employee survey results.
The article also referenced an altercation on 22 June 2023 at a Luncheon Lecture about Enbridge’s Line 5 where "a group of Anishinaabek protesters disrupted the event". Several College officials, including Dr. Finley, were filmed attempting to push the protesters out a door and take a banner from them. The lectures have been a part of NCMC for several years, and require pre-registration and payment, to attend. No matter anyone’s personal views of the environmental issues associated with Enbridge’s hoping for Line 5 to span the straits, the protesters were not registered, nor paid, luncheon lecture attendees; as such, the protest appeared to be purely a political move, in search of publicity, which they seem to have garnered.
Petoskey’s McLaren Northern Michigan recently has opened an expensive expanded facility which presently is not staffed adequately. In trying to assist with the problem of a nursing shortage in the area, the two colleges, NCMC and Davenport University, have formed a partnership, after receiving a $2 million grant from the state of Michigan in Public Act 103 of 2033. NCMC students who complete their associate’s degrees in nursing can easily transfer to Davenport to pursue their Backelor’s of Science in Nursing. The program will allow students to spend three years at NCMC, with their fourth year still locally, but as Davenport students; offered online. This program will allow students to stay in the area, rather than going off to another area to lend their nursing knowledge. Dr. Finley told the partnership is about shaping the future of nursing in the region.
