The Harbor Springs Municipal Airport is governed by the Harbor–Petoskey Area Airport Authority, although the Michigan Bureau of Aeronautics still refers to the Airport as the Harbor Springs Municipal Airport. The Authority has a 25 year rolling lease to operate the airport, but the City of Harbor Springs still owns the airport property. It is located in Little Traverse Township.
In 2022 the Harbor Springs Municipal Airport Manager is Mark Zabawa with phone number 231 347-2812.

The 1945 article below refers to the old Emmet County Airport as being at Darling's Corner.
It seems the Darling Family lived on the airport corner off M-119. The 1940 obituary for Mr. Lucius Steele "Lou" Darling [shown at right] explains that Mr. Darling had "purchased the Sexton farm at what was known as Sexton’s Corners on the Harbor Springs-Petoskey Road and later moved there." Mr. L.S. Darling owned the Darling & Beahan Seed business [shown below] that had been located next to the railroad tracks between East Mitchell and Michigan streets. In 2022, the location of L.S. Darling's business, now a parking lot, is a downtown public parking lot, aptly named the "Darling Lot."

28 August 2023 Clipping Below of Notice: Jervis B. Webb Company had leased land from the City of Harbor Springs adjacent to the City’s Harbor Springs Airport. Notice was given to the electorate in the September Petoskey News Review of Harbor Springs proposing to sell the property (Parcel # 08-16-15-300-002). In 2022, Jervis B. Webb Company moved their business to a totally new facility in Boyne City.
It is not known how this situation with the proposed sale of airport property was resolved. It was a very complex situation involving not only Harbor Springs, but also Emmet County. The City Council must have 2/3 approval, as well as a vote of the citizenry of the City AND the County had restrictions with JB Webb buildings located on it. Please contact this web master with any information on this situation by clicking HERE.

Article Below Left: The plane in the photo above was likely the plane described in the article: "The huge 21 passenger plane circled the airport several times and finally landed on the north-west-southeast runway which was finished last fall. There was plenty of margin for the big ship to land... Although the runway is now 75 feet in width the wings of the huge plane extended far over each side as it ran for the take-off... There are now 51 WPA employees working on the project. Plans are underway for an administration building and hangars."

New Airport Terminal
It is difficult to determine where the noted $400,000.00 figure (text under the above photo) for the cost of the new terminal was derived. When the "Fed, State, County Funds" figures used to build the new terminal are added, as listed in the article above from the same newspaper as the above photo and text... the result is $1,151,442, not $400.000.00, ALL taxpayer money; for which the Citizens were at least THANKED!
When the new Airport Terminal Building was featured in the 28 October 1971 Petoskey News Review the Manager Clarence Tatro of the Emmet County Airport signed the advertisement below stating
"Thanks To The Citizens Of Emmet County."

The Vice President with an entourage of Secret Service,

Following his time spent with visitors and supporters, Vice President Mike Pence was taken aboard a U.S. Army Chinook helicopter to reach the 33rd biennial Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference on Mackinac Island, Michigan, where he delivered remarks. After the conference Vice President Pence arrived back at the Pellston Regional Airport about 3 PM and was airborne for Washington D.C. by 3:20PM.

The 11 June 2022 Petoskey News Review reported:
"Ryan Bachelor, director of the Pellston Regional Airport, said the retail price for jet fuel is now about $7.61 a gallon. Six months ago the price was $5.35. 'Our cost of jet fuel is double what it was this time last year and incrementally increased 169 percent in the last six months,' he said."
Fuel sales is the largest revenue generators for the Pellston Regional Airport. It is hard to predict what effect the rising cost will create for fuel sale amounts. The amount of supply at the airport remains adequate at the present.

~ Pellston, Sault Ste. Marie airports to be impacted by 'tag flights.' ~
SkyWest Airlines announced 'tag flights' will begin running through Northern Michigan airports starting 12 September 2022. Pellston, Sault Ste. Marie, and Alpena airports are expected to experience the flight changes. Thus, more people from different areas will compete for limited tickets on each plane. Tag flights mean travel to each place before reversing their flight... thus flights from each airport to Detroit will no longer be nonstop. The new flight paths may require delays and overnight necessities, adding to expenses, and time. The airline said they are dealing with pilot shortages. Access additional information about this situation for the airport by clicking HERE.

In line with Boyne Country general policy, the new airport is privately financed strictly with Boyne Country capital without government funds or subsidy,' continued Kircher. Already complete is the first phase, 4,500-foot long, 150-foot wide, north-south direction gravel runway adjacent to the Boyne Highlands' Robert Trent Jones 18-Hole Championship golf course. While it is presently unlighted, fly-in guests are met at the telephone booth and transported to the main lodge."

A 22 October 1971 Petoskey News Review reported: "'We are undertaking an aggressive effort to make our Boyne Country ski areas the most accessible in the world,' Kircher points out. 95 percent of all our guests drive Michigan's well-maintained highways - Michigan Highway Department's snow removal equipment is among the best in the world - and we are implementing this by vastly improving our airstrip at the Mountain, formerly sod, is now completely hard-surfaced, lighted and features tie-down facilities year-round. It also has fueling services and a delightful terminal building where pilots wait only a few moments before being transported to the main lodge some 500 yards distance. In the winter, it is not unusual to see as many as 60 private aircraft every weekend on the airstrip. The new air terminal will operate ADF equipment is on 80F homer frequency 263KC (BFA).'"

The Pellston Regional Airport houses the accepted donated rusting dome (from Cranbrook)
which was to be used on the 2017 observatory at the Headlands.
The donated dome was rejected, however, in place of a new larger dome.

On 30 April 2020 the Petoskey News Review reported: In a budgetary crunch brought on by COVID-19 pandemic, Emmet County will have to wait until December to receive some of its payments from the SkyWest Airline that operates out of the county's Pellston Regional Airport. The airport actually is receiving some relief in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, in the form of a $1,104,773 grant through the government stimulus package, although it is not yet clear for what that funding may be used.
UNINTENDED DISCHARGE OF PFOS-FREE SYNTHETIC FIREFIGHTING FOAM AT PELLSTON AIRPORT
For Immediate Release – Feb. 5, 2021
On Jan. 27, 2021, while conducting tests on one of the airport’s fire trucks, an unintended discharge of firefighting foam occurred at Pellston Regional Airport grounds. The release occurred in an area already known to have aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) impact from previous investigative efforts. With the ground being frozen, the AFFF is not expected to leach to the ground water levels at this time.
Airport Rescue Fire Fighters (ARFF) are required by FAA regulations to test the onsite fire trucks, to ensure that they are in good operational condition and ready in the event of a crash. Pellston ARFF Inc., the company Emmet County contracts with to handle any firefighting incidences at the Pellston airport, was using an Ecologic foam testing mobile cart (E-One) to assess water flow in a 2000 Oshkosh T-1500 crash truck.
ARFF employees were running the tests in five-second intervals to purge the lines of air to see if the meter was operating correctly. Approximately 10 seconds after starting the test, a foam mixture was seen being discharged from the roof turret of the firefighting truck and the test was immediately shut down. Pellston ARFF estimated that approximately one gallon of Solberg Arctic 3% PFOS-free synthetic firefighting foam concentrate was discharged with the foam and water mixture on to the pavement and snow covered area that is designed for the collection of surface water run-off, south of the ARFF building. This area already contains a monitoring well from previous investigative efforts.
Emmet County Administrator Michael Reaves was notified late in the afternoon hours of January 27, 2021 of the incident, and he immediately consulted with current airport consultants, on actions needed to address this release, so that the processes of investigation, notification, mitigation and remediation of the incident could rapidly begin. Administrator Reaves also notified department officials of the Environment, Great Lakes & Energy (EGLE) – Gaylord District Office, which included EGLE supervisor Randall L. Rothe.
Rothe made the necessary notifications of other Michigan departmental staff that include EGLE remediation and redevelopment division members, Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART), Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Aeronautics staff and the State Fire Marshall office. Both Emmet County staff and ancillary assisting entities, along with EGLE staff and other stated Michigan departments and officials, are working together to address and mitigate/remediate this incident. Cleanup efforts will include additional levels of testing in the areas affected, along with removal of areas of soil, grass or snow that were exposed to the liquid. Additionally, the containment of any cleaning solutions, water, snow or ground surface areas will be prepared for proper disposal under EGLE guidelines.
Reaves and the Emmet County Commissioners, along with state of Michigan officials, wanted to inform the public the incident had occurred and assure local residents that Emmet County officials immediately prepared mitigation and remediation plans and put them into action, with the concurrence of, and under the guidelines given by EGLE staff members.
Both Rothe and Reaves, along with testing engineers will monitor and report the findings of additional testing that is already occurring in the immediate area. These results will be reported to EGLE as required.
“The ability of both state and local governments to quickly work together in incidents like these is imperative to quick resolution and results,” stated Reaves, who also thanked Rothe for the cooperation and assistance he offered, along with the other state agencies that were notified and assisted in regards to this incident.
“We appreciate Emmet County’s response and notifications to us concerning the unintentional release of the newer AFFF foams,” Rothe said. “These are shorter-chain PFAS, and not known presently to cause long-term effects to the public, environment and ecological systems. We are working cooperatively with Emmet County to deal with this new release. Given it is in an area already known to contain the older PFAS and with the ground being frozen at the time, we are pleased with their planned response to deal with the removal of soil, and cleaning of hard surfaces that may have been impacted by this unintentional release, to prevent run-off from reaching the groundwater. We are all committed to long- term efforts to deal with all releases from AFFF foam at the Pellston Regional Airport.”
