This is the corner that includes Walgreens, Rite-Aid, McDonald's, and Chase Bank Branch in 2018 (Chase Bank Branch closed 20 June 2019). By 2022 the bank building had been razed and a new building raised to house Bay Street Orthopedics' Urgent Care satellite location.

1892 Article Above: Petoskey Pioneers Amos Fox and Capt. H.O. Rose had been identified with northern Michigan for the previous quarter of a century. The firm of Fox & Rose was the FIRST business firm in Petoskey, which stood in the middle of what became Mitchell Street.

2012 ~ SEASON OF DISRUPTION...
The 29 March 2012 Petoskey News Review reported: "The Petoskey Department of Public Works expects the downtown intersection of Lake and Howard streets to close starting next week for resurfacing work. Work at the corner is scheduled to begin Monday, April 2... If weather cooperates, the closure is expected to last three to four weeks."
2018 ~ SEASON OF DISRUPTION...
The 22 March 2018 Petoskey News Review announced: "Construction ahead Many major street projects slated for 2018"...
The bridge over the Bear River on Bridge Street will be rehabilitated.
Emmet Street from Washington to Standish Avenue AND Sheridan Street to US 131 will have the top layer ground and repaved (Sheridan Street work began 15 August 2018).
A section of Bayfront Drive will be resurfaced (after Labor Day). A complete reconstruction of West Lake Street from Wachtel west to Magnus Park will be completely reconstructed. This will close a portion of the Little Traverse Wheelway for about 4 to 6 weeks from mid-April to mid-May.
A 10-foot wide concrete path on the former railroad corridor will be extended from Howard Street to Emmet Street.

The intersection of Lake and Petoskey streets will be reconstructed with the project extending north on Petoskey Street and a short distance on Bay Street. Work began on the project on 24 April 2018, with the intersection closed to traffic, and access to business maintained. (Slideshow Below shows this Construction/Disruption ~ Photos taken 25 April 2018)
2023 ~ SEASON OF DISRUPTION...
About 25 March 2023 Petoskey's "small project" will focus on aesthetic fixes at the Mitchell Street and U.S. 31 intersection. The about $50,000 project will include the removal of some trees and shrubs, install new lights, realign the sidewalk, and move signage. The goal is to "open up that whole corridor, that viewshed, so people can get a great glimpse of our wonderful downtown without obstructions," said city manager Shane Horn during the 20 March 2023 city council meeting.
Another city project will happen in April 2023 on Bridge Street from the bridge to Franklin Street; including curbs, water mains and sidewalks, mill and fill and spot repairs of concrete and sidewalks on Porter and Maple streets.
It was not too many years previous to April 2023 that the entry into town had been a "Straight-Shot... Straight-View" looking into downtown, after crossing the Mitchell Street bridge. Then, sometime after the 1980's the triangle that had existed in the intersection on Mitchell Street was removed, and the bumpout, now blocking the view, was installed. Now, that seems to be just another "short-sighted" decision by the city powers that be.

During several years, especially in the 1950s-60s-70s, the stores on Lake Street in Petoskey CLOSED during the winters. The store windows were all covered with brown butcher paper. The stores moved to Scottsdale, Arizona, or Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. In Ft. Lauderdale on East Las Olas Boulevard the stores closely resembled those of Petoskey's Lake Street summer shops. Photo/Text Below: Ray Lewis Signs provided an appealing answer for "A Welcome Bright Spot" on the otherwise empty, or butcher paper covered, windows of the Lake Street shops that headed to Florida in the winter months.

In the very early years of Petoskey the flow of the Bear River had a gigantic effect on the businesses and industries such as Hankey's, the paper mill and such. In 1889 the Olds Family of Walloon Lake brought the Petoskey businesses and industries on the river to a standstill as noted in the articles below:
The Bear River water was again messed up in the very early 1900s, but by Petoskey's McManus lumberman. He manipulated the level of Walloon Lake through the dam, and ended up with a court case that took YEARS, and went to the Michigan Supreme Court to be settled. The many articles referencing the case can be viewed on the Walloon Lake Wandering website page of "Flowing Water."

The article section below was within the 13 February 1907 newspaper titled "Commits Suicide with 32 Calibre E.M. Johnson Found Dead Yesterday Morning." Madam Starr's husband Eugene M. Johnson, a well known auctioneer, had committed suicide in his room at 328 ½ Mitchell Street, Petoskey, Michigan. The article told how the two had come to be married instigated from a an advertisement inserted in the papers by Mr. Johnson for a wife or housekeep, to which Madam Starr replied. Other news articles followed, one being in the 15 February 1907, giving more details leading up to the deed.

Perry F. Powers in his 1912 A History of Northern Michigan on page 122 listed the beginnings of the Emmet County Justice System: A.J. Blackbird in 1855 was a probate judge. Then, almost 20 years later, "in 1874 Charles R. Ford was elected prosecuting attorney at Little Traverse (now Harbor Springs). D.R. Joslin came from Cheboygan in the winter of 1875 and located at Petoskey. Soon after C.J. Thorp settled in Petoskey, and in the fall of 1875 J.G. Hill located at the same place. The next were Turner and Andrews, A.J. Southard and George W. Stoneburner, who located at Little Traverse. Mr. Joslin remained only a few years and removed from the county. The bar in 1884 was composed as follows: Petoskey-C.J. Pailthorp, J.G. Hill, Clay E. Call, Jay L. Newberry, M.S. George, Ira G. Mosher, Ezra C. Barnum, H.F. HIggins, David Herron, John Mosher, R.C. Dart and D.C. Paige; Harbor Springs-Benjamin T. Halstead, Wade P. Smith, George W. Stoneburner, Alphonso J. Southard, Andrew L. Dedel and William Crosby."

Photos Left and Below: Jim and Irma Rand, along with J.Parke Sager of Walloon Lake, took over Ballard's from Don Ballard in 1982. Then, the Rands bought up Sager's portion of the business in 1987. In February of 1989, the Rands moved the Ballard's location kitty-corner to 2111 East Mitchell Road. The business moved for two reasons–its lease was up at the old location and it was time for an expansion. The business plan included more large commercial jobs; like the recent contract for heating, cooling and plumbing at the new Petoskey Middle School. (Reported in the 13 June 1989 ~ Petoskey News Review).
In March 2021 Ballard's Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration employees Dick Matelski, Alan Towne and Travis Peck finalized their acquisition of the business from Jim Rand and this wife, Irma Noel who had owned the business since 1982. The original company had been founded by Don and Esther Ballard in 1952. In 2021 the Ballard's business location is 2111 East Mitchell Road, still near Ballard's previous location of Division Corner.

(Located on the corner of Maple and Charlevoix avenues in Petoskey, Michigan)
Bill & Carol's < Gert Wagar < Don, Vi, Louie Stark < Joseph & Margaret Robarge < Cranes
- In September 1901 when Mr. John T. Crane was constructing a one story frame store building on the corner of Maple and Charlevoix avenues, a high wind completely demolished it. Mr. Crane was inside the structure at the time so was bruised. By June of 1902, less than a year later, Mr. Crane, 50 years old, died as reported, "after an illness of over five months resulting from an injury received in the fall of a building last autumn." Mr. and Mrs. Crane built and lived in the house directly across the street from the store at 520 Charlevoix Avenue which is where the store owners Bill and Carol Hansen lived in later years. Since Carol passed, Bill continues to live in the same house with his wife Diane. See the article and two obituaries below for John C. Crane. Pictures and articles are included on the People web page of this web site for John Crane's wife Anna who turned 100 the same year in 1952 that Petoskey turned 100.
- Next the grocery store location was known as Harry Lee's Corner Store. Mr. Lee was born in 1871 and died 26 July 1941. Mrs. Robarge's obituary stated that she and her husband "purchased Harry Lee's Corner Store," but the property abstract does not show Harry Lee as an owner. Perhaps, Mr. Lee ran the store for Anna Crane after her husband John Crane died.
- In February 1937 Joseph and Margaret Honor (Kilborn) Robarge bought the store which they expanded and renamed Robarge's Superette". The store was known as Robarge's IGA. The Robarges lived in the house at 521 Charlevoix Avenue next door to their store. Then in 1952 the Robarges purchased Thompson's IGA on the S-W corner of the "4 Corners" on Emmet Street, Petoskey where Margaret Robarge operated Robarge's IGA until 1974 when she retired.
- Louis and Viola Stark had purchased the West Side Grocery in 1947 and named it Stark's West Side Grocery. Louis retired in November 1955 when his sons took over the store. In 1952, the time of the Centennial of the City of Petoskey, the Stark Family including Louie, Viola (Eppler) and Don (son) as noted in the Centennial clipping above, did own Stark's West Side Grocery. Don's sister Doris Stark married James H. Gibson, Jr. Later, Don, his brother Lyle, and their brother-in-law James Gibson, owned and operated the IGA Food Liner on Bay Street in Petoskey (across from the Perry Hotel).
- Clare E. Wagar, 42, and his wife Gertrude "Gert" (Lyons) Wagar purchased the West Side Grocery on 15 October 1959, renaming it Wagar's West Side Grocery. Clare had previously operated Wagar's Electric Service. Then, with no previous illness, less than a month after buying the West Side Grocery, Clare died unexpectedly following a heart attack on 8 November 1959.
- In September 1963 Bill & Carol (Bates) Hansen ran the store for a month before purchasing the store on 16 October 1963 from Gert Wagar who was widowed from Clare Wagar. Carol was only 19 then, and not old enough to own a license for a grocery store. Bill, three years older than Carol, decided to embark on the venture. Bill & Carol owned and managed their store for the MANY years since then. Carol passed in 2011, and now, in 2018, the Hansen's children are still running the business... Kelly Pollion, William (Bill) Hansen and David (Scooby) Hansen.

James Buckley’s 1911 obituary told “He came to Petoskey in 1874, when this city was but a struggling village, and engaged in business as a carpenter and builder, until 1878 at which time he associated himself with George A. Mosher and established the Petoskey Record, being interested in this venture less than a year, however, having been elected as register of deeds, serving four years therein. During this period he entered the hardware business and in which business he was identified for many years."
By 1882 Buckley was ill, and sold his share of Watson & Buckley Hardware to Mr. H.R. Daggett. This is the Mr. Daggett whose property was given to the city in 1924, and eventually became Camp Daggett on Walloon Lake. Click HERE to read about the house on 106 East Mitchell Street that Buckley built for his business partner Otis Watson. |
1884 records show "'the Buckley-Daggett hardware store was the furthest store to the west on Lake Street.' Over the years that building which Buckley-Daggett occupied became 326 East Lake Street. The Polk City directory in 1888 verifies the existence of Buckley Hardware and that is the earliest Polk directory of Petoskey in the library. The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps show a plat of a hardware store being on that location also in 1885 and the name appears as Buckley Hardware in 1889 as the Sanborn maps became more sophisticated. Other evidence verifies a hardware store was on that site as early as 1878... Daggett Hardware wanted to sell their business in 1887 so the father-in-law, Henry R. Daggett, in all likelihood approached the son-in-law, Bert Cook, to purchase the hardware store. The 326 East Lake Street then became Cook’s Hardware. Cook was estimated to have made $75,000 per annum from sales within a 100 mile radius of Petoskey. Those dollars in 2013 dollars would approximate $2,000,000. Bert Cook turned the day to day operations over to Charles Raynolds who along with J.E. Bain both clerked for the Buckley-Daggett store. Then in 1905 the store became known as Northern Hardware. In 1907 the Northern Hardware name was changed to Petoskey Hardware — more than likely for legal reasons of another store existing with the same name somewhere in Northern Michigan. This is where E.A. Bremmeyr became introduced to the hardware business as a stock boy. E.A. Bremmeyr’s given name was Emiel Alphonsus but was always “Al” to everyone who knew him. When Charles Raynolds died in 1910 his wife Mary Raynolds became president of Petoskey Hardware and E.A. Bremmeyer became a clerk at Petoskey Hardware. Four years later in 1914 Petoskey Hardware there was a fire and the Raynolds family chose to dissolve their ties with the hardware business and Cook. E.A. Bremmeyr then went to work for Bump-McCabe hardware on Mitchell Street. Bert Cook, though, rebuilt the damaged building using bricks and mortar and reopened as Petoskey Hardware. In 1915 Cook remained a silent partner, but this time with J.E. Bain who had apparently coaxed Al Bremmeyr away from Bump-McCabe Hardware to help clerk at the new Petoskey Hardware. Then in 1917, Cook formed another silent partnership with Bain and Bremmeyr and the store was named and operated under the title of Bremmeyr-Bain Hardware. The hardware store then incorporated in 1927. Glen Bain, the nephew of J.E. Bain, partnered with A.E. Bremmeyr after the death of J.E. Bain in 1949. Bremmeyr-Bain operated under that same title until 1987." ~ Jerry Donnelly (published 8 October 2013 in the Petoskey News Review)

A 1964 Petoskey News Review article stated:
"The Circus Shop is moving into new quarters after being in business 16 years at 325 East Mitchell Street according to the owners, Mr. and Mrs. George Danser, who have purchased the Arcadia building next door from Mr. and Mrs. George Batsakis.
To be known as the Circus Shop Children's Apparel Center, Mrs. Danser said the new location would give considerable more room for expanded operations and new lines coming in.
The Arcadia Restaurant has been closed for several weeks and the decision to sell the building by Mr. and Mrs. Batsakis brought to an end an era of one of Petoskey's restaurants which dated back to the turn of the century."
The Circus Shop first began in 1946 on Howard Street in a store later called Kilborn's House of Books. After the Circus shop moved into the Arcadia location, the bank purchased and expanded into the previous 325 East Mitchell Street Circus Shop location.

He admitted in later years after fighting his way out of bankruptcy through Lake's Wallpaper and Paint Co. in Petoskey that the Fallass Drug Store purchase had been a mistake for him because he did not know anything about pharmacy and very little about that type business.

~ Gidley Building < McCabe Hardware ~
IN 1967, the Sears Store had been the Chattaway Building with three apartments above it, and was located next to the east of JC Penney store. Next to the Sears Store was located the Gidley Building. When the Gidley Building was built in 1896 it was known as the Gates Building. At one time the Gidley Building was owned by Dr. Ellery A. MacDonald. Gidley first operated a drug store in the Meyer Building in 1935, then in 1938 Gidley moved to this burned location. To the east of the Gidley Building was the McLellan's Store. The City Hotel was once located where McLellan's was located. Click HERE to access additional information about the City Hotel purchased by Mr. Rowan to become the Clifton Hotel. McCabe Hardware once occupied the part of the Gidley building which had been used to extend the McLellan Store years previous to this 1967 fire. Article Below: Ironically, almost 50 years to the day of the 4 March 1967 Gidley Building Fire as noted above, construction materials on Mitchell Street were being dropped off to rebuild the upper floors for the burned out Gidley Building. While a one-story building, it had most recently housed the Ben Franklin Crafts, with more information about this Ben Franklin Crafts location viewable above on this same web page..

The city of Petoskey was named after Ignatius Petoskey, the father of Bazile Petoskey who operated the store location in the 1884 advertisement below. This location has had the perfect commercial site... even when Petoskey Street extended through the Midway's busy business district directly to the water front. The location has been owned by the Shorter Family from 1946 until the present (2017) and features an historical marker telling more of the history of the location. When Carl Shorter, the originator of Shorter's store, passed away in 1983, the name of the store was changed to "Grandpa Shorter's" to honor him.

~ J.W. Shorter & Son Mercantile ~
The same multi-generational Shorter Family owns J.W. Shorter & Son Mercantile at 311 East Lake Street, just a couple of stores east of Grandpa Shorter's Gift, Inc. Ruth and Carl Shorter's granddaughter Jennifer now (2020) operates the Shorter businesses. She has told the history of the 311 property which once held the store "Cameo". The spinster Montgomery sisters had owned an antique store at 311. Like other East Lake Street properties, after the busy warm Petoskey summers, the sisters packed their goods and traveled to warm locations around the country. Ruth and Carl Shorter bought the building from the Montgomery sisters (daughters of Nathan and Helen Montgomery) who had already retired, and had deserted crates filled with inventory including many cameos... thus the Shorters named their new store The Cameo. The Shorters did not then own their Shorter store on the corner where they had been renting... so were covering the possibility of not being able to renew their lease. Finally, they were able to purchase the corner store, sold off The Cameo antique inventory, and rented The Cameo property to another business for many years. In 1997, the younger Shorters rented 311 from their parents/grandparents, renewed the building to its original era and opened J.W. Shorter & Son Mercantile in 1998.
Photo/Clipping Below: Mayme H. "May/Mae" and Gertrude A. Montgomery were well-known in Petoskey for many years. They owned considerable property in Petoskey and lived on Lake Street. They spent their summers in Petoskey and their winters in St. Augustine Florida for more that 30 years. They also were well-known among the resorters. Mae Montgomery's obituary stated that she was a cousin to Mrs. Homer Sly who owned the Bay Shore Lime Kiln and was involved with various other Petoskey area enterprises. Mae's Petoskey address was stated as 618 East Lake Street, while her father Nathan's obituary stated that for many years the family resided at 423 Howard Street.
Advertisement Below: It is not known IF this is the same store that Bazil Petoskey owned... previous to Shorter's, but the merchandise seems similar. If anyone know the answer to this please contact the webmaster by clicking HERE.

"The Racket" on 311-313 Mitchell Street and a store at 441 Lake Street...
Both in Petoskey, Michigan, in the early 1900s
J. Greenberg was the proprietor/owner of a couple of stores in Petoskey, Michigan. Advertisements in the early 1900s show he owned The Racket on 313 Mitchell Street. Later he added on 311 Mitchell Street to this store location. He also owned a store on 441 Lake Street, Petoskey, Michigan, as noted in the short article above. The advertisement on the left includes the description of "fancy China, such as German..." The cup in the photos above are labeled as "Little Traverse Bay, Petoskey, Michigan, and stamped on the bottom as "Made in Germany for J. Greenberg Petoskey Mich." Obviously, the cup is a very precious antique, embracing the history of Petoskey's bay, and one of its many businesses over the last century.

Prior to this 316 East Mitchell location, the Cook Electric name (after owner Clare Cook) in 1921 was located at 316 Petoskey Street. Bill Buckmsteigel became partner with Cook in 1927 and they moved the location to 316 East Mitchell location. They sold their business in 1977, but the ghost painting of their name on the side of the building remains.

The Petoskey franchise was opened in 2006 by Scott Byrd, and continued in 2013 by Amy Westphal. The Grain Train Natural Food Market will lease the space for a cafe, opening in early summer of 2018.

The 30 July 2020 Petoskey News Review announced the closing for good of the Grain Train Co-op which, like many businesses around the entire country, had tried to survive as a business through the COVID–19 Pandemic, but the management noted: "We did not think that when we closed for the pandemic that it would be permanent. The continuing challenges due to the pandemic have changed the nature of the restaurant business, our ability to maintain staff and, ultimately, our likelihood of success."

The Farm Supply Stores, including Gruler & Sons in Petoskey, Michigan.
In 2003 Gruler's built their Charlevoix, Michigan, Gruler location. It was sold in 2018. The 125 Fulton Street, Petoskey, Michigan, location was the only existing Gruler store which closed 1 October 2022. The property included the former Hankey lumber yard across the street [See Hankey information on this same page]. The Gruler property has been purchased by the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation with future plans for an affordable housing development. Al Gruler Jr. spoke of the competition no longer being another "mom and pop" store, but rather "on-line stores" which have a massive advantage; the future/progress cannot be stopped. Al Gruler Jr.'s retirement plans include his hobbies of fishing, hunting and farming. He had worked in the same store with his dad from 1975 after graduating from Petoskey High School, until the closing of the store in 2022.

When Don and Katy KIlwin came to town they purchased Weimer's Bakery at 314 Petoskey Street. To increase their customer base, the Kilwins added chocolates to the bakery business. They expanded by building a new building on the corner of Jackson and West Mitchell Street (across from the hospital, now Johan's Pastry Shop) with the Grand Opening announced in the 22 May 1958 Petoskey News Review. The bakery generated heat was not conducive to making their chocolates, so the Kilwins extended their facilities with the Wilbur building right next door (Photo Below Right) in 1967, adding gifts to their line of products. In 1978 they sold those two properties; and also the downtown 316 Howard Street location was sold to Wayne and Lorene Rose. The Roses kept the "Kilwins" name; franchising the name as far west as Colorado, and making the name known nationwide. Meridith Brown owns the franchised downtown 316 Howard Street Kilwins store.
Photo Below Left: The Kilwins opened the store and "factory" of candy and sundries on Howard Street. Later, the candy factory was located, separately, on Division Road, Petoskey, Michigan. Now [2018] two other locations are used within Petoskey. The Roses sold the headquarters to Don McCarty; 1050 Bay View Road, Petoskey, Michigan. The FIRST Meijer opened in 1934 by Hendrik Meijer in Greenville, Michigan. Meijer's headquarter remain in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The business began as a barbershop, later including Meijer's Grocery as an added benefit to Meijer's barbershop clients. His first inventory was worth $338.76. Hendrik's son Fred and daughter Johanna continued the concept so that in 1941 they opened their second store, and by the 1960's more than a dozen Meijer stores dotted the Grand Rapids area. Meijer stores embraced several different innovations: 1) 1938-shopping carts 2) 1945-half of all Meijer positions were held by women 3) 1954-automatic conveyer belts in the checkout lanes 4) about 1954-advertising on TV 5) hypermarket "superstores" with all septs; groceries, home goods, clothes, et.al. 6) 1970's-scanners 7) 1980's-24 hour open 8) 1990's-launched the Meijer website; all of this always included acres of parking. The name changes from Thrifty Acres to just Meijer in the 1980s. Meijer did attempt to add less successful spin-offs; Sagebrush, Copper Rivet, and Tansy and SourceClub, and Fresh Thyme. AND, of course, the Meijer stores each have a penny coin-operated pony ride near the check-out aisles with the pony always named 'Sandy'. Meijer Pharmacy offers FREE select antibiotics and FREE prenatal vitamins, with a few exceptions.
Hendrik Meijer was a Dutch immigrant, with today's Meijer's in the third generation. Hank Meijer is the son of Lena Rader and Frederik Meijer, and grandson of Hendrik Meijer. Now living in Grand Rapids, Hank Meijer is married to Liesel Litzenburger, a writer and novelist, who was born and raised in the Boyne City, Walloon Lake, and Petoskey areas. Liesel is the daughter of Boyne City High School graduate Seberon Litzenburger and Petoskey High School graduate Cammie Reycraft.

While asking $2,500,000.00, On-line Real Estate One gave the following description of the 1420 Standish Avenue Michigan Maple Block property built in 1918: "Amazing opportunity to own a large acreage parcel along the Bear River recreation corridor in the city limits of Petoskey only one mile from the downtown Gas Light district. The site is 12.4 acres with 11.1 usable acres and features over 1,000 feet on the Bear River. There is an existing 83,660 SF historic building on the site that was previously used by Michigan Maple Block Co. A buyer could use some or all of the existing structure but the value is in redeveloping the property. This has been designated a MEDC Priority Redevelopment Site by the City of Petoskey allowing for a streamlined process for potential developers. Planned Unit Development, residential, multi-family, industrial and mixed-use are all possible uses."

Photo Below: This location also housed Gilman and Kneal sporting goods years ago.
Photos Below: In 2019 new owner of city buildings on Howard and Lake Streets refurbished the exteriors of his buildings... changing Pappagallo from the drab tan/gray to a sparkling white. The business to the left (east) of Pappagallo had housed a design business, and then farther to the east, a Music store. In 2020 the music store was bought out by Musik Haus with a Gaylord business base. In the 6 March 2021 Petoskey News Review it was announced that Musik Haus was already moving to a bigger footprint, a block over, on Mitchell Street into the previous Mitchell Street Frameworks Gallery site, beside the previous JC Penney's building.
The 10 September 2019 Petoskey News Review reported: "After a nearly 40-year presence in downtown Petoskey, women's clothing store Pappagallo is on track to close by the end of September." Joan Morford has worked for the store for 38 years, including 32 years as owner.
By December 2019, the Pappagallo building at mailing address 402 East Lake Street had become PEcado, a limited designer fashion-wear store, selling quality clothing for any occasion. Alono Kelly, a native of Ukraine, has opened the store.
By November 2021, the PEcado corner building at 303 Howard Street
had been purchased by Howard Property Partners LLC.

The 30 June 1995 Petoskey News Review reported: "The daughter of one owners, Sandy Fochtman Loyer, put her memories to paper for the Bells (Ross and Lynn Bell; present owners in 1995) recently and recalled fondly living above the bar in the 1940s and 1950s. The past of what is currently the Park Garden Cafe is varied and interesting. to say the least.
The man who constructed what's currently the Cafe was Alonzo Nash McCary, who moved to Petoskey from Cadillac between 1874-75. He built 'The Palace Billiard Rooms' and his establishment because known as an important dance hall.
Around 1888, Frank Greulich bought the bar, added the garden to the east of the building and renamed the establishment 'The Annex.' In 1895, Greulich redesigned the interior of the bar and installed the marbled black walnut with a cherry finish bar back and the French plate glass windows that are still present today.
Upon his death the establishment was bought by Frank Fochtman, owner of The Grill Cafe, two doors down on the east. The two eateries were connected by an enclosed garden eating space, complete with skylights and palm trees, hence the name Palm Garden.
When Emmet County voted in prohibition in 1909, Fochtman apparently didn’t agree, and subsequently spent four months in a Detroit prison in 1912 for violating liquor laws.
The Cafe was named for the (Pennsylvania) Park on the west and the enclosed garden on the east said Lynn Bell. She is unsure as to exactly when the establishment took the name, but it has stuck.
The tin ceilings, fieldstone basement, sculpted walls and the massive cherry wood bar bar, 32 linear feet of two inch-thick wood, built by Brunswick in June of 1895 are the setting for the centennial celebration. The silver seal of authenticity is still intact, and the bar is looking surprisingly perfect for having to deal with 100 years of barroom antics.
The mirrors are of original too, she said. ‘Some people say the mirrors are dirty, but really it is just the silver coming off the back.’
Ernest Hemingway frequented the establishment after World War I, and it is suggested that his short story, ‘The Killer,’ was set in the Cafe, the layout of the bar, and the description given in the book.
‘It was some of his Nick Adams pieces,’ Lynn Bell said. ‘He mentions that it used to be a saloon and it had a lunchroom.’
The progression of history is documented in the Cafe, with the large foyers as you enter off East Lake Street.
Originally called the sampler, vendors would set up displays and try to pedal cigars and other goods to bar goers. The women and children were not allowed to enter the bar, Lynn Bell said, so they were required to wait in the sample room for the men.
‘They had spittoons on the floor, stuff like that,’ she said. ‘The women and children were not allowed to enter.’
Gone is the sawdust on the floor, the spittoons and pre-PC entrance policies. What is still intact is the massive, reddish bar that consumes the left hand wall of the area.”

The Annex in 1888 was owned by Frank J. Gruclich.
Article Below explains much of the following about the history of the 2022 City Park Grill:
Alonzo Nash "McCarty’s Saloon and Billiard Hall" was sold to Frank J. Greulich who added the garden on the lot east and renamed it “The Annex.” The garden featured a large fountain in the center. Greulich was the man who designed the interior of the cafe [City Park Grill in 2022] as it is now with the black walnut bar, with a cherry finish, and large French plate glass mirrors, but Greulich died, 13 June 1897 and was buried in the St. Francis Cemetery in Petoskey; shortly after Greulich's business improvements were completed.
Next, The Annex became the property of Frank Fochtman who extended it another lot east where he had the Grill Cafe which later became the Penn-Dixie building. Mr. Fochtman did well with his first class Grill Cafe, Palm Garden [432 Lake Street], and billiards saloon until 1909 when Emmet County voted in prohibition. Even though Mr. Fochtman served prison time while trying to maintain his business during prohibition, Frank Fochtman sold the Grill Cafe to the Portland Cement Co. so The Annex was reduced to two lots. After Mr. Fochtman died in 1932, the Fochtman Family ran the business until it was sold to Robert and Lodema Shier of Pellston in 1954.

Historically speaking: The location began as McCarty's Saloon and Billiard Hall. The 1894 hand carved bar of cherry finished black walnut, and hickory woods, is noted not only for its beauty, but because local author Ernest Hemingway had his special place where he sat at the bar. Now a sculpture of Hemingway stands very close to this location in the Pennsylvania Park. "The black walnut bar marked with an 1894 patent date, was built by Brunswick-Balke-Collender, makers of pews and bars", stated Bob Shier, owner of Park Garden.
Here is an old family story about a relative who worked in the Park Garden Cafe... copied from Great-grandma's 17 July 1938 letter: "Ward’s boss is in L.T. [Little Traverse Hospital in Petoskey] Hosp with a brain operation & Ward has been running the beer parlor, for about 3 weeks. They have trouble keeping bar girls on account of the long hours, so Ward took on a fellow, & he has seemed real good. So last Sun. nite Ward locked up around one & went to bed upstairs. Seems he & this waiter slept in the same room. So for some reason Ward woke up at 3:00 A.M. & the man was gone. Also $8.00 out of W.’s pants & all the keys, & when he got down stairs the cash register was short $115.00 and the door was open & Ward’s car was gone. Ward called the state police, and they found Ward's car [it’s the one like ours] smashed into a tree over near Atlanta. The police think he aimed it at the tree and then jumped out. Last heard, they hadn’t gotten him yet. His name was Fred Disco. A fellow from Alanson, works for Connie, says a Fred Disco over there was a parolee from State Prison, & he answers the same description, & he was an awful fellow & we all wonder if he isn’t the same one. It was a good thing Ward didn’t wake up while he was going through his pants or he might have been killed. You know how Ward swears & blusters. I feel sorry they lost their car. It wasn’t so much, but he got around with it all right."

This information is quoted from Above Article: "One of Petoskey’s homesteaders was a man by the name of Alonzo Nash McCarty. He came to Petoskey from Cadillac and immediately fell in love with Little Traverse Bay, and the budding town. In the late spring of 1875, McCarty began building a two-story saloon and billiard rooms a little east of the hotel that D.J. Cushman was building, and opposite the Rose House (Occidental), the FIRST hotel built in Petoskey."
The information below presented to the Petoskey City Council, and included in a grant proposal is incorrect for the date the City Park Grill was built... should NOT be 1869 (before the railroad even had accessed Petoskey) but, rather built in 1875 when Mr. McCarty came to Petoskey.

Two 1924 Articles Below: Joseph A. Magnus purchased the Alameda property, corner of Mitchell and Howard streets, where he would erect a two or three-story modern store and business block... The Alameda block was destroyed by fire, a year and a half previous. Eventually, J.C. Penney was located at the corner of Howard and East Mitchell streets as early as 1927. This is the ONLY location J.C. Penney ever occupied in Petoskey in all of its years in the city... referred to as "an anchor store." The building had once been owned by Joseph A. Magnus whose name is still (in 2023) on the facade of the building above the main entry. By 2020 J.C. Penny store had closed; a great loss as an "anchor store" in downtown Petoskey.

Berg also owned "The Hole/Pit" at that same time.

Photo Below: J.C.Penney has been closed since 2020 as noted in the above photo description. Rumors now float that building owner Mr. Bob Berg is ready to begin renovation of the building, so the 13 June 2022 photo below shows the BEFORE Berg renovation condition of the building.
Property Search Images Below: The JC Penney property was registered in early 2023 with the Emmet County Register of Deeds as Petoskey Skyboxes LLC. Bob Berg owns a squared off property… not angled like along the old train tracks. Years and years ago, more than just one track ran through that angled area, so maybe the state had an easement or something for all the tracks. But, it certainly appears now, that the state, nor the city, has any legal right to the squared off property that includes the raised flower beds. Bob Berg should be able to use that triangle piece of his land as he sees fit, within the laws/ordinances. The property description does, however, reference a lease, so perhaps that lease puts restrictions on the use of that part of the property.
The new Petoskey Skyboxes condos will start at $990k. The two story condos will include the present second story and additional space on a new top floor of the historic Magnus Building. Petoskey Skyboxes web site can be accessed by clicking HERE.

2021
The 1 April 2021 Petoskey News Review reported Citizens National Bank has purchased the newspaper's building at 319 State Street, Petoskey, Michigan. The newspaper business had been housed there for nearly 60 years, having moved there in July 1964 [Another source stated the News-Review purchased the buiiding in 1957]. Years earlier the property had been the site of the Petoskey Iron Works.
Changes with the printing site having moved to downstate Michigan, virtual/at-home staff especially during the 2020> COVID–19 pandemic, and more on-line services had diminished the need for a large newspaper facility in Petoskey. The last newspapers printed at State Street was January 2020. So, the Cheboygan-based Citizens National Bank purchased the properties of both the Petoskey News Review and Print Shop buildings in downtown Petoskey. Presently, Citizens National Bank has two nearby locations including a walk-in branch on Michigan Street and a loan office in the Danser Building just across State Street from the Petoskey News Review building.

Preston Arthur Feather was a co-founder of the company in 1915 with the first store on Sheridan Street, Petoskey, Michigan. The government took over that facility with the onset of WWII, for the processing of milkweed floss to be used for military life jackets. Access more information on the web page about "WWII Need for Milkweed Pods" and Petoskey being the "Milkweed Capital of the World." After a short period of time Preston Feather was located at 405 Lake Street in downtown Petoskey, after which the company moved to its present location at 900 Spring Street, Petoskey. In 2017 other business locations for Preston Feather are in Harbor Springs, Gaylord, and Traverse City.
The 26 January 1954 photo below was taken the same time as the photo above with the article announcing the celebrating of Preston Feather's 77th birthday. The article reported the many structures he had built: FIRST structure was his own Supply Warehouse on Fulton-st. at the Pennsylvania railroad crossing in 1912; 1913 the Temple Theater; 1921-building then used as Hooker's Laundry; 1924 the Northern Auto Co and Sly Auto Co. garages; 1925 Dean Bros.; 1929 Montgomery Ward; 1936 Achenbach building. ~~~ Expanding into the lumber business on a large scale, Preston Feather purchased the Blacker Pump Co. building on Sheridan-st. in 1916 and occupied those quarters until 1943 when he sold the site to the Defense Plant Corporation which established the Milkweed Floss Corp. during World War II. After a short stay in a downtown location, he built his present quarters on Spring-st.

Photo Below: By 1952 the original 1915 location of Preston Feather had become Barnum Brothers Fibre Company on Sheridan Street. The building, no longer Barnum's, still remains somewhat in 2020.
The Founding Feather Family owned the Preston Feather business for more that 60 years when Bill and Julie Norcross bought the business in 1979. When Bill was seeking to retire, he asked his friend Kirk Jabara to purchase the business, which he, and his wife, Lynne did in 2015. Their daughter Rachel Jabara Huntman, joined the business in 2016, and has purchased a majority of the business in 2021. The business has continued to grow as a family business just as it started; maintaining shorter building cycles from the planning phases of a project to its completion. They are growing the business with an eye to growth in the future.

On 27 August 2015 Ryan Bentley of Petoskey News Review wrote an article titled: Tribe prepping former casino site for mixed-use project... "Because the Victories property is in trust status with the federal government, the Odawa tribe isn't obligated to secure local zoning or site plan approvals before developing the land at the U.S. 131/Lears Road intersection. But Bryan Gillett, vice president of Odawa Economic Development Management Inc., shared some of the tribe's basic objectives for the site with township planning officials, noting retail and residential as possible uses... A preliminary development concept for the site shows multiple buildings interspersed among various parking areas, access drives and a town-square area, a format referred to in development circles as a "lifestyle center." Gillett said the tribe expects to take a phased approach to development, and to keep an existing tribal health building in place at the site's southeast corner."

Frank Boles has summarized a history/bio of the life of Ralph Connable, owner of the White Swan Steam Laundry, which included the following narrative about the White Swan Laundry. The rest of Boles' interesting article may be accessed by clicking HERE.
"Looking for a line of work that would not be seasonal, he [Ralph Connable] learned to run a laundry business by volunteering to work for free. After three weeks of “training”, he discovered that the owner of Petoskey’s White Swan Laundry was dead – and the business for sale. With a $500 loan from his father and several notes to various creditors the White Swan Laundry became his.
He learned two things running the laundry. Business was steady during the tourist season, but come October it slumped badly. The second thing he learned was that, when the business burned one night, the insurance money he planned to use to rebuild it went instead to the various creditors whose notes he had signed."

This expansion of Bay Street Orthopedics & Spine practice follows a "needs assessment" which determined Petoskey could support three and a half urgent cares.

“The Petoskey Brewing Company opened in 1902. Every two years, local residents voted on whether to keep it open. The decision depended upon who had the upper hand, the wet or the dry forces in the area. ‘Petoskey Sparkle,’ the brewery’s most famous beer, owed its success to the business’ location.
According to 1933 advertising, ‘The buildings was located at this point because there is a flowing well of marvelous, clear sparking water right in the main building; as 90% of beer is water, and it is the one factor of greatest importance in the brewing of a good product. We claim that there is no brewery in the state as favorably located as we are in respect to the quality and low cost of their water supply.’” ~ "Reflections" supplement to the Petoskey News Review

The uniquely V-shaped building close to the direction of the railroad track was constructed around 1900 by R. Koplegard, Asmus Peterson and George S. Danser, all from West Virginia. The business in the building was Petoskey Wholesale Grocery, providing stock to lumber camps and stores throughout Northern Michigan. That firm was disbanded around 1940 to become Danser & Company, when the Zipp Lumber Company took over the building. In 2018 the building is named the Emmet County Professional Office Building on Petoskey Street, Petoskey, Michigan. The shape of the building was designed as a trapezoid to sit nicely beside the railroad tracks.
The 11 June 2015 Petoskey News Review presented local historian Jerry Donnelly's research of
