Photos 1952 Above and 2011 Below: This 1952 Petoskey Centennial era photos shows Fochtman Motor Co., which took up the entire Michigan Street parking lot space as shown in the photo below. In the 1952 photo above left the building wall which now showcases the mural can be viewed in the very left hand side... now belonging to Flowers From Sky's The Limit.
The 29 August 2014 Petoskey News Review reported: "in 2001, Jackie Burrell, owner of Sky's the Limit Flower Shop in Petoskey, commissioned Dickinson (Photo Left) to paint the east wall of her building with a street scene. The wall is more that 20 feet tall and 170 feet in length and is one of the largest murals Dickinson has painted. The wall surface was too rough to paint with a brush so Dickinson did the painting with 4-inch rollers. Since then, he has completed three additional murals in Petoskey; Ben Franklin on the Petoskey News-Review, the Shorter's mural on the back of Grandpa Shorter's and the the Wheelway mural on the bike path between Petoskey Harbor springs."
Muralist Terry L. Dickinson was born in Greenville, Michigan. He graduated from Central Michigan University in 1965 with a Mathematics and Physics degree. Eight years later, after teaching, he moved his career into art. His FIRST mural was a 4 July 1976 painting in Bay City, to commemorate the nation's bicentennial. It was reported that, "From September of 1974 to July of 1976, he had completed more than 50 images of both local and national moments in history." By 2016, the mural had deteriorated, and no longer existed per the article:
"Bay City Bicentennial mural now gone, but there's hope for a replacement"
Terry also works in such diverse mediums as base relief, hammered copper, sculpture, oils and pen & Ink.

The "Wheelway Mural" illustrates the different modes of transportation
which were used over the years on the nearby "Wheelway Trail,"
presently used by bikers and pedestrians.

In 2017, the Little Traverse Wheelway, a non-motorized paved trail, extends 23.4 miles...
from Harbor Springs to Charlevoix, Michigan.
Bikers began using the trailway in the 1890s when bicycles became a popular mode of transportation.
The NO TEAMING OR DRIVING sign on the path meant the path was not to be used by horses...
only to be used by cyclists and pedestrians.
Because it was thought advisable to have a bicycle path between Bay View and Petoskey,
one day all the stores closed and the business men grabbed their shovels,
and constructed the Wheelway.
~ 1905 ~
Photo Below: In 1993 this NO TEAMING NO DRIVING sign was donated by the Little Traverse Kiwanis Club
to replicate the original sign from the horse and buggy days.

The existing bike trail was encouraged and developed in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Funding was secured in 2017 for the original muralist Terry Dickinson to touch up the mural
on the backside of D&W Market, very close to the "Wheelway Trail."
Terry L. Dickinson's work, which included repairing wall cracks,

The mural was painted by Ann Arbor artist Katherine Larson. She painted it in her studio over a five month period on to aluminum sections. Then the segments were installed on the wall of the Central Drug Store right on Bridge and West Clinton streets, very visible in downtown Charlevoix. Katherine has a website showing her many various works.
The mural captures time frames from about 1910 to Earl Young's 1970s mushroom houses. The stone wall that is carried along the bottom of the mural transitions into the very style of Earl Young's houses.

Now disappeared (UNTIL 2022)...
Possible explanation for why this mural is no longer... The mural in the entrance to the high school was torn down as a part of the 2001 high school renovation. When two counselors' offices were added to the library space, those offices each had a window overlooking the Petoskey High School lobby where the original mural had hung. Story has it that the mural had been installed there originally to help cover up a mistake.
Where did the mural disappear when removed? Does anyone have any other knowledge? Contact the webmaster. SEE ANSWER below... with new 2022 lobby renovation.
The small article below has school board member Mr. Starmer explaining some of the reason for the existence of the Greco-Roman mural in the beginning. So, have the "fire regulations" changed so that the lobby windows now, legally, are exposed?

Reported in the 27 August 2022 Petoskey News Review: Petoskey High School is undergoing renovations and adding additions, including fixing up the school's existing weight room and changing the front entrance; both at a cost of $4.3 million, funded by the district's sinking fund millage. The projects are to be completed by early December. The front entrance will be delineated, and become ADA compliant. In the process of the lobby renovation, the 1966 mural was exposed as shown in the photos below. It is revealing to know that the mural has existed all of this time; just not viewable. So far, however, it is unknown what the future holds for the 1966 Greco-Roman mural.

by Mrs. Mary DeGuvara
Article with photo below stated: "... special exhibit of the world's largest example of Indian bead work, 'The Last Supper' by Mrs. Mary DeGuvara, a native Indian artist... This solid bead copy of Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting is 11 1/2 by 5 1/2 feet in size and contains 1,788,76 [sic] colored beads. The unusual tapestry weighs 43 pounds and is displayed on a special loom." The bead work contains three miles of nylon thread (another source stated 10 1/2 miles of thread???) and took three years to complete. 121 different shades of beads were used, including 14 carat gold beads in the halo surrounding Christ's head.
Article and Photo titled: "Masterpiece of Indian Beadwork"
Article Below: Mary DeGuvara's nephew Dan Chingwa learned beadwork from his aunt who beaded The Last Supper mural above. Chingwa told, "In 1954, his aunt went on 'You Bet Your Life,' a television show. She was given 15 seconds to read an announcement from an index card. She told America that she does bead work and asked them to send her any beads they have in the attics or garages. 'She got beads from all over the world,' Chingwa says. Many of the packages were accompanied by stories about their origins. Some traveled from Europe earlier in the century and not been used. Chingwa still runs across the stories as he opens bags of beads. They are of countless sizes and colors. Chingwa even has gold beads from the Vatican. While his aunt was crafting a picture of the last suppler, someone contacted the Pope and asked him to send gold beads to be placed around the head of Jesus Christ. Those beads now number among the three million that make up the picture, which is now on display at the Van Andel Museum Centers, formerly Grand Rapids Public Library."

Located on Mitchell Street, Petoskey, Michigan
The following description of the above Carnegie Library mural is from an old Petoskey News Review article clipping (undated) written by Jan Nagel:
"Rapunzel, The Wizard of Oz, Paul Bunyan and a parade of many other fairy tale and fantasy characters have taken up residence in the The Petoskey Public Library.
Artist Kari Bradford from Grandville, Michigan, and Harbor Springs came to the library on Mitchell Street one day and asked librarians Shawn Duffy and Colleen Richards Verge if they'd like something painted on the walls in the children's reading room.
Coincidentally, a mural was one of the projects they had been thinking of for the library's new look, and so Kari began sketching and coloring characters from children's stories to the delight of young book fans.
Support for the artwork came from the memorial fund of Mrs. Ruth Todd, who served for 18 years on the library board from 1959 to 1977, the last fifteen years as president. Kari Bradford is majoring in art at Alma College and has decorated library walls in Wyoming and Grandville, Michigan, too.
Eventually the twenty-one year-old painter hopes to develop a career illustrating children's books."

"Mr. Ed" Lantzer spent many of his last days sitting near the front window of a donated storefront on Mitchell Street, Petoskey, Michigan, with his multiple pieces of marquetry as seen below titled "My Father's Love." He created his art from many small pieces of wood of various colors and varieties to form patterns or pictures. After Mr. Ed died in Petoskey on 29 December 2009, his friend Lashelle Vanhouten of Kalkaska, Michigan, wrote a book titled The Mural Writer revealing Mr. Ed's troubled, but inspiring life.

The painted background measures 53 feet by 17 feet and is more than 100 years old. The scene is of a beach with old ships and boats as in early Bay View, is painted on an enormous drape. It has been valued at over $50,000.00 replacement cost.

The photos directly below [click on photos to enlarge] show the same building with various signs from over the years painted on the side of the same building, with the sign, called a "ghost sign" as it appears in 2015. In September 2015 artist Abby Kent was hoping to raise funds to restore the sign image which is degrading. Those funds did not materialize. [BUT... See Below]
By August of 2017, support for most of the "Ghost Signs" project was provided by the family of Henry Redder. In the 25 August 2017 Petoskey News Review, reporter Matt Mikus wrote about Henry and his wife retiring in Petoskey in 1970, from Pennsylvania. Henry's son Tom told in the article, "He (Henry) was very active in some of the veteran associations, rode in the parades, and he really loved the community. When he passed away in October, we were wondering what we could do in Petoskey to honor him. We thought of things like a mural or a bench, but then we learned about Abby Kent (the Ghost Sign artist), and it just seemed perfect, so we contacted her." Once the project commenced, others did contribute as well. Skip Dyrda of Sarasota, Florida was the co-painter. In 2017, Grand Traverse Pie Company, and North Woods Yoga Studio are housed in the building at 316 East Mitchell Street.

A Petoskey News Review 1 August 2003 article by reporter Lisa Hayes was titled "Mural beautifies block wall at News-Review." It states: "The Petoskey News-Review is celebrating American history and freedom of the press in a new mural that's being painted on the west side of the building... Brian Fuller of the News-Review's press department suggested including American inventor Ben Franklin in the mural, since he was an early printer....'We also included the Gutenberg press, because Johann Gutenberg was the first person to print with moveable type,' Winter (the newspaper's editor and publisher in 2003) said. 'And the Declaration of Independence is in the background, to signify freedom of the press.'"

Miss Pailthorp wrote: "The panels painted by the Ottawa Indian children were written up in Michigan History, March 1953, a magazine published by the Michigan Historical Society. No other school has panels of this kind painted by young Indian artists in Michigan to my knowledge."
The photos of the first four murals below were taken
26 August 2015 near the office of Petoskey High School.
As of that time, the location of the other four murals was unknown.

In March of 1953 Miss Pailthorp published her article "Petoskey Murals" in the Michigan History Magazine shown below describing the eight paintings and the student's names: Josephine Otto, Oakley Bush, Laura (Lorna in another article?) Jean Schneider, and Jo Kirwin.
Article Below: "A Miss Otto - possibly Josephine Otto - painted four murals, although her signature is not on any of those now hanging at Central and its not known where these murals are."
After the four photos taken 26 August 2015, the location of the missing FOUR murals has been discovered from an on-line posting as noted below:
The four photos below of four of the paintings of Francis Pailthorp's students' paintings were included in an article in the July 2012 Odawa Trails newsletter. The accompanying article stated the painted murals are hanging in the LTBB Governmental Center in Harbor Springs, Michigan. It stated that the murals had been found in the basement of the Petoskey High School, but no date given for that happening. Note other articles below telling of the LOAN of the murals by the Petoskey Public Schools, with no mention of the murals ever having been returned.

Photo Below: Sadly, a fire destroyed the home of Mrs. Sandra Fassett in Charlevoix, Michigan. "Among the furnishings lost in the blaze were several woodburnings by the late artist-author Harold Kohn, a former owner of the house. They included a large mural over the fireplace depicting deer browsing around a tree-fringed lake. On cabinet doors in the study, Kohn had burned pictures of several birds native to Michigan."

Pellston, Michigan
2021
The 10 June 2021 Petoskey News Review reported that the community of Pellston are planning a mural which will draw "its inspiration from the area's history and what it means to the designers." A group of Pellston Public Schools students with Mary Rapin, from Bliss Gardens Farm and Community Kitchen are spearheading the mural project. The mural design was inspired by "old-time postcards" and will say 'Pellston' in big bubble letters, with the letters filled with the meaning of Pellston. The mural will be painted on a storage building near the Pellston Library. A date for dedication of the mural has been set as 1 July 2021.

Temporary Mural Art Installation hung 12 April 2022
Sixteen-year old Ukrainian boy, Artem Varakuta stated, "When Russia invaded my country, I created this design hoping that peace will come to Ukraine as soon as possible." Artem's dove of peace is created in the sky blue and sunflower yellow colors of Ukraine. Crochet artist London Kaye with the mission of Love Across the USA which guided the art installation in Petoskey, Michigan and two other US sites: Los Angeles, California and Westminster, Colorado. Kaye's crocheted creations take community teams, using crochet hooks, to transform yarn into the medium to express the importance of translating Artem's hopeful message. Volunteers worked 11 April 2022 to assemble the crocheted creation and more volunteers hung the temporary installation between the Crooked Tree Arts Center and the Carnegie Building on 12 April 2022.

The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council is painting a bright future for our watershed with our newest addition—an Interactive Rain Garden Mural. Thanks to generous support from the Oleson Foundation and Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, our downtown Petoskey building has transformed into a vibrant work of art that serves as an educational resource on rain gardens and their role in protecting our waters.
Michigan artist Sarah Landstrom brought the mural to life with her distinctive style, characterized by vivid colors and fluid brushstrokes, depicting twenty native Michigan species—each with a QR code that can be scanned with your phone camera. Unlock the secrets of each native plant, insect, fish, bird, and animal, and discover their role in rain gardens and sustaining our delicate ecosystem.
What is the buzz about rain gardens? Every time it rains, water rushes off surfaces like roofs and driveways, carrying pollutants along with it—fertilizers, oils, and other contaminants. This runoff can harm nearby water quality. That is where rain gardens come in! These gardens are strategically placed in areas where water naturally flows. By capturing as much water as possible, rain gardens help slow runoff and filter out those unwanted substances.
When visiting a rain garden, including the one in front of our building, the wonders of native plants that filter water and create a haven for pollinators and other wildlife are witnessed. It is like stepping into the mural itself, with ruby-throated hummingbirds and bee balm plants bringing it to life!
Visit the mural and the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council at 426 Bay Street, where the mural can be viewed by scanning the species' QR codes with your phone. A printed guide is also available in the office, along with a list of Petoskey area rain gardens for a self-guided tour.
